MDI’s Population projection 2022 – a detailed picture of future development and a new scenario for an internationalising Finland

National goals in respect of preventing climate change and boosting the circular economy require strengthening. This entails the creation of viable solutions and indeed the adoption of a new approach in the municipalities. Based on the National Urban Strategy, a preliminary study has been produced which considered a number of potential policy instruments for climate and circular economy work. For the municipal level, the publication provides information on what kinds of instruments already exist, while for the state level, it suggests a number of new ideas for prospective policy instruments.

MDI supports municipal strategic work

There will be significant changes in the role and tasks of the municipalities as social and health services as well as rescue services move to the new welfare regions while labour and economic services, on the other hand, are transferred to the municipalities from the beginning of 2024. These perspectives and other current change factors affecting the operating environment of municipalities are of interest to municipalities.

According to projections, in 2040 there will be 200 municipalities in Finland where more than a third of the municipality’s population is over 65 years old while in 16 municipalities, the share of people over 65 will be more than half of the municipality’s population.
