The bundle of challenges of the Sustainable City program: Urban planning that takes sustainability goals into account

The project was part of the cross-cutting joint development of the Sustainable City program coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment, which aimed to obtain information and solutions to the common challenges of sustainable development in cities. The work produced concrete development activities, new ways of doing things and peer learning.

There were two main themes in the definition of problems: the balance of growth and the environment and the planning and implementation of space use. The urban planning solution was involved in the search for Espoo, Helsinki, Karkkila, Kemi, Oulu and Turku.

Two parallel projects were implemented by a consortium led by MDI and Demos Helsinki, of which Demos led the urban planning challenge package and MDI the well-being and social sustainability challenge package.
