Study on a low-carbon aluminium cluster

The first new primary aluminum plant in continental Europe in over 30 years is planned for the Kruunuportti industrial area on the border between Kokkola and Kruunupyy. If realised, Kokkola could become a significant hub for low-carbon aluminum, combining production and further processing with research, development, and industry expertise.

MDI conducted a cluster study on low-carbon aluminum production initiated by the city of Kokkola, with the aim of identifying the opportunities and conditions associated with the creation of a low-carbon aluminum cluster in the region. The study examines the various stages of the low-carbon aluminum production value chain, maps the expertise and capabilities critical to the cluster’s operations, and identifies bottlenecks and development needs.
