XXX Analysis: Reasonably priced Helsinki Region North succeeds in migration

The ten neighbouring municipalities of Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa in Finland (KUUMA municipalities) are major winners in terms of migration. KUUMA receives double advantage: at the same time KUUMA municipalities receive surplus in migration and also benefit from the structure of movers. On the basis of the conducted migration analysis, two overall conclusions may be drawn: firstly, KUUMA municipalities are one of the most magnetic regions in terms of migration. Secondly, there has been a major shift in values from spacious living and housing ideal in early 2000s towards higher density in urban structure and better services in the 2010s. KUUMA region consists of 10 municipalities: Hyvinkää, Järvenpää, Kerava, Kirkkonummi, Mäntsälä, Nurmijärvi, Pornainen, Sipoo, Tuusula and Vihti, and the total population of the region is ca. 320 000. The region is the second largest in Finland by population after Helsinki. As a result of intense co-operation, the strategic weight of the region is increasingly important. The results of KUUMA region are drawn from the migration analysis made by MDI. The study focused on the quantitative migration analysis as well as on the qualitative analysis on the structure of movers. The qualitative analysis examined the individual, social, and economical attributes of the people moving in and out of the region.
