Updated population projection for Kuusamo

The City of Kuusamo needed an update to its earlier population forecast in light of the latest 2025 data. Drawing on the previous population forecast together with the most recent population statistics, MDI produced an updated population forecast for the city.

As a basis for the update, an analysis of the city’s actual population development was first carried out, with particular focus on 2024–2025. This analysis covered factors underlying population development (such as birth rates), groups migrating into the city, immigration, and differences in development within the city.

The population forecast was then updated both for the city as a whole and for its internal areas. The intra-city forecast took into account area-specific differences in how population development takes shape. The forecast included three distinct scenarios: one depicting relatively weak future development, and two depicting stronger future development driven by factors such as investments in the area and increased migration.

In addition to the population forecast, a model of the future development of the number and structure of households was produced for the city, to support planning for the city’s future housing production outlook.
