Front page The World’s Best Cities (WBC) Course The World’s Best Cities (WBC) Course Date: 1.4.2025 –31.8.2026 Workshops, webinars, lectures, camps The World’s Best Cities (WBC) Course The World’s Best Cities (WBC) Course is a unique learning and development programme that provides participants with in-depth insights into current urban development trends and international best practices. The course brings together urban development experts, decision-makers, and professionals interested in enhancing their knowledge and applying what they learn to the development of their own cities and work environments. The course aims to offer a comprehensive and practical perspective on the success factors of cities, urban planning and development strategies. The following key themes will be covered during the course: • Cities Thriving in the Global Economy – Economic vitality, innovation capacity, and international networks of cities. • Urban Planning for Wellbeing and Sustainability – Opportunities of a compact urban structure, as well as ecological and social sustainability perspectives. • Demographic Changes and their Management – Urban demographic challenges, migration, and social sustainability. • Managing Urban Development and Growth – Strategic agility, managing change processes, and understanding the interdependencies of urban phenomena. The course employs diverse learning methods, including expert lectures, group discussions, urban analyses, and international case studies. A key component of the course is an international study trip to Milan & Bergamo, Italy, where participants will gain first-hand experience of urban development models and best practices in these cities. The course is structured into three phases: 1. Preparatory Phase (Spring 2025) – Two in-person meetings in Finland, where participants will deepen their understanding of the course themes and prepare for the study trip. 2. International Study Trip (November 2025) – A trip to Milan and Bergamo, exploring international urban development models and best practices. 3. Application of Learnings (Spring 2026) – A final seminar and the production of a course publication, where participants share their insights and apply their learnings to the Finnish context. The final seminar will be open to all interested stakeholders. Participation in the course is by invitation only. The Finnish Association of Local and Regional Authorities (Kuntaliitto) has selected the participating organisations and individuals. The course is designed for professionals in urban development, economy, planning and governance who wish to deepen their understanding of the development of the world’s best cities and apply international insights in their work.
