Segregation analysis of Peltosaari

Peltosaari is a predominantly apartment-building area located close to the centre of Riihimäki. The project produced a statistics-based review of the development of the Peltosaari area in Riihimäki, focusing particularly on indicators describing demographic and socioeconomic development.

The study examined population development and population structure, employment and unemployment, housing, socioeconomic structure, and future population development. It also included GIS-based modelling of risk factors for disadvantage within the area, using 250 × 250 m population grid cells. The study compared the development of the area with the rest of Riihimäki, with other predominantly apartment-building areas in Riihimäki, and with municipalities along the railway corridor in Southern Finland.

The study identified characteristics and key development trends of the area through various indicators. Based on the study, segregation in the area has intensified in recent years, and, when examined in a broader geographical context than Riihimäki alone, Peltosaari also constitutes a significant concentration of disadvantage, which is strongly affected in particular by the deterioration in the employment situation during 2023–2025.
