Facilitation of workshops for updating the Fish Passage Strategy

The process of updating the National Fish Passage Strategy has been launched as part of the implementation of the Government Programme. The new strategy will reconcile fisheries, environmental and energy policies. Its aim is to define future measures for restoring threatened migratory fish stocks by re-establishing their natural reproduction. A key issue in the strategy update is the reconciliation of fisheries and hydropower interests, as well as the objectives of several other policy sectors. The new strategy seeks to set out the most effective measures and operating practices for advancing efforts to restore migratory fish stocks.

The strategy update was initiated with preliminary studies commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The actual update process will be carried out in 2025–2026 through broad stakeholder cooperation. As part of the Fish Passage Strategy update process, three participatory stakeholder workshops will be organised, with the aim of gathering stakeholders’ views and developing the content of the strategy. MDI will facilitate the workshops, two of which will be held in person and one remotely, and will prepare summaries of the workshops.
