Analysis of Pirkanmaa’s carbon sinks and storages

In a project led by FCG’s urban planning team, the current state and near-future development of carbon sinks and storages in Pirkanmaa were assessed. The assessment of the current state was conducted using spatial data relying on default values for carbon sinks and storages by land cover class. The project also examined biodiversity and the impact of regional land use changes, such as planned wind power areas, on the development of carbon sinks in Pirkanmaa in accordance with the regional land use plan.

Furthermore, three scenarios on the development of the region’s carbon sinks were then developed: a Business as Usual (BAU) scenario, envisaging increased utilisation of wood raw material and a scenario focusing on forest management aligned with the bio-circular economy. The results of the study will be utilised, among other things, in updating the regional climate road map for Pirkanmaa.

FCGs project team included project manager Jan Tvrdý and experts Ella Stark and Marko Nurminen.
