Hearing and discussion events on linguistic rights and the status of national languages were facilitated virtually

During the autumn of 2021, MDI facilitated a series of ‘hearing and discussion’ events on linguistic rights and the status of national languages, Åland included. which includes several projects related to the theme. (More information: https://oikeusministerio.fi/en/linguistic-rights)

The series of events began with a hearing event on the Strategy for the National Languages of Finland in September and continued with a discussion event on the preparation of the Åland Government’s Åland Strategy in November. In December, work continued on a discussion event on a project to improve the language climate, aimed specifically at bilingual municipalities. The discussion sought to identify good practices and examples with a view to strengthening and maintaining bilingualism.

The series of events ended with the announcement of the Strategy for the National Languages of Finland. Although implementation of the strategy is particularly focused on government actors, bilingualism affects society much more broadly and affects both the individual citizen, municipalities, the third sector and the business sector.
